Starbucks Offers FREE Grounds For Your Garden

It is that time of year again to nourish our plants that are growing in the garden.  I know that I try to stay away from chemicals if at all possible.  One of my successes has been to add coffee grounds to the soil around my hydrangea and fuchsia plants each year and I attribute it all to my grandfather!

My grandfather always believed in organic gardening.  I would always be by his side in his garden where he would share all his organic secrets with me.  When I was young, I remember he always tossed used coffee grounds at the base of the hydrangea outside his front door.  It was always so beautiful! When we moved into our house, I wanted to remember him in that special way and planted a hydrangea by our door as well using coffee grounds to fertilize too.  This year, my Endless Summer hydrangea is HUGE and healthy! I attribute it all to the coffee grounds.

Did you know that Starbucks offers FREE Grounds for you Garden? When you stop into your local Starbucks, check around. They usually have the grounds bagged up in a container either inside or outside the store.  If you do not see them, all you have to do is ask them for them. If they have some, they will gladly give them to you for FREE.  There are many plants that thrive on used coffee grounds besides hydrangeas and fuchsias.  I just discovered that tomatoes love them as well so I can’t wait to add those plants into the mix as well.  Oh, and an added bonus….the slugs despise coffee grounds and will stay away from your plants too. Can’t beat the mix!

If you would like to read  up on how to use spent coffee grounds in your garden, http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Coffee-Grounds-in-Your-Garden  is one of many links you can start with to assist you.  Happy Gardening!
